This matches well with the dark hardwood flooring and contrasted by the light gray walls and bright white ceiling. This flooring also pairs well with the modern stools of the breakfast bar. The simple yet elegant wrought iron chandelier of this kitchen stands out against the white ceiling and light beige walls. This goes well with the white shaker cabinets and drawers of the L-shaped cabinetry with a beige lit backsplash for a unique aesthetic complemented by the dark hardwood flooring. There is also a couple of charming glass pendant lights over the wood-top island matching the hardwood flooring.

Island Kitchen Layout

Both of these are contrasted by the black granite countertop and backsplash as well as the patterned black wallpaper. This is an elegant galley kitchen with a dining area beside it by the window. This dining set has a long dining table paired with dining chairs of the same dark wooden tone as the U-shaped peninsula of the kitchen with a built-in pair of wine storage. This is a Victorian-style dine-in kitchen with a single-wall layout.

Glass-front cabinets can break up the monochrome look, as well. Hannah Tyler Designs knows that a high-contrast space never goes out of style. In this black and white kitchen, the matte black hood takes center stage while the white tile and cabinetry bring a little brightness to the room.

How To Draw The Best Layout

This bright and simple kitchen has a dining area beside it consisting of a round glass-top dining table surrounded by modern white chairs making it stand out against the dark hardwood flooring. This is also mirrored by the bright cabinetry of the kitchen that matches the white coffered ceiling. This dine-in kitchen has an abundance of natural lighting that mostly comes from its row of tall windows right by the dining area with a dining table and wooden chairs. These match well with the hardwood flooring that is contrasted by the stark white cabinetry of the kitchen.

Hamui says open-space plans with clean and natural looking finishes are incredibly popular. “A kitchen island with seating area, preferably in two-levels to encourage multiple types of gatherings, from cooking with company to having a quick bite” are winners, he says. Jasmine Lam keeps the kitchen of her London pied-à-terre stocked with water for guests. Fresh greenery on the bar cart brings the pale sage green cabinets and forest motif Roman shades to life. In this kitchen by Cate Dunning, glossy tiles in a herringbone pattern contrast with the matte greige painted cabinets and the dark stone counters.

Opt for a freestanding table instead of a traditional kitchen island. This can double as a workplace for all your kitchen creations and a gathering place for a sit-down family dinner. This bright shade of orange contrasts dark wood countertops and a shiny white tile backsplash. And contrary to what you might think, orange pairs well with many colors. Whitewashed wood cabinets lend warmth to this Scandi-inspired space, subbing in for stark white cabinetry.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

LED lighting is the brightest option, but stick-on battery-powered puck lights can significantly light up your counter space too. If you have a kitchen island, consider adding a group of pendant lights or a chandelier above the island to provide additional task lighting. Rail lights are great for large kitchens that need general illumination, and the individual lights can be oriented any way you need. This charming kitchen has multiple tones that complement each other like the light wooden cabinetry that matches with the light hardwood flooring. This goes well with the dark red tone of the walls that complement the black countertops and backsplash.

Kitchens with Groin Vault Ceilings

Create unexpected contrast in a white kitchen by painting cabinets a rich shade of green. This verdant color scheme gives a nature-inspired feel when paired with rattan barstools and houseplants. Lighter surfaces throughout the space, including gray countertops and a wood island, prevent the room from becoming too dark. You'll find the perfect palette among these kitchen paint color ideas. Browse these pretty white kitchens and farmhouse-style kitchens to cook up gorgeous design looks to suit your space and taste.

Marrying both, the floor tiles are a custom mosaic design reminiscent of an old-school Parisian bistro. Cameron Schwabenton gave this kitchen a surge of energy with fun vintage pieces (those chairs!) and brass accents. The glossy dark blue cabinets are actually from IKEA—she just customized them with brass hardware. Colleen Dowd Saglimbeni of CDS interiors knew every square inch counted in this floating home in Sausalito, California. This dining nook set off of the kitchen features sneaky storage in the form of drawers underneath the banquette. They hold entertaining must-haves like extra napkins and serving pieces without crowding the already full cabinetry.

Make an all-white kitchen shine by trimming it in metallic accents. This space features brass on the hood vent, faucet, pot filler, and barstool legs. The baby blue vinyl seats of the barstools stand out against the otherwise neutral room. An open-concept kitchen plus all the right materials is the perfect recipe for an inviting, warm space. This room features red-leaf maple cabinets balanced by white accents to create a natural, airy gathering space for whipping up a new recipe and entertaining. Completely removing a wall to create an open-concept kitchen can cost a pretty penny and isn't always feasible structurally.

"I always like my kitchens to feel like rooms and not utilitarian spaces, so I always encourage my clients to paint their kitchens with a lively color," Kedigian says. The kitchen in fashion designer (and Grey Gardens owner) Liz Lange's New York City home isn't large, but she wanted it to feel as bright and airy as possible. "Rather than going prewar in its aesthetic, we gutted it and went very clean and modern," she says. She coated the hardware-free cabinetry in reflective white lacquer and used white plaster paint on the backsplash, which looks unfussy and isn't too precious. In many ways, your kitchen space dictates which kitchen layouts are available to you. With an open concept design, you can go with a single line with an island or L-shaped with an island.

This coffee station doubles as a wet bar and is conveniently located in the kitchen to assist with brewing and mixing needs from sun up to sun down. The kitchen shelves contrast vertical beadboard paneling and warm wood base cabinetry. While admiring this kitchen dressed in emerald green cabinetry, you might not spot any appliances.

kitchen design photos

This brightness is carried over onto the white shaker cabinets and drawers of the large kitchen island and the cabinetry lining the wall. This charming kitchen has a single-wall layout with a large alcove housing the cooking area with a stainless-steel stove-top oven topped with a beige vent hood that blends with the walls and ceiling. This hangs a couple of pendant lights over the large kitchen island with a breakfast bar. This is a charming kitchen with a white shed ceiling further brightened by the skylights and the recessed lights. It complements the beige walls adorned with wooden shelves, and large wooden structures housing the appliances. Creamy white cabinets and natural wood refresh this light and bright modern kitchen.

This goes great with the L-shaped cabinetry on the walls that have wooden cabinets and drawers and matching brown tiles to its backsplash. A dash of color comes from the colorful patterned area rug in the middle of the hardwood flooring. The beautifully patterned wall of this bright and airy Spanish kitchen is a nice contrast to the white shaker cabinets and drawers of the wooden structure housing the stainless steel appliances. This is across from the small white kitchen island in the middle of the hardwood flooring.

Another way to brighten up your kitchen is with a fresh coat of paint. Kitchen walls tend to get dingy over time due to accumulated cooking residue. Give your walls a good scrub and repaint them with a bright, stain-resistant paint.

Grokking the System Design Interview The #1 Online Course

grokking the system design

Sometimes this means you’ll be up against an Advanced System Design (ASD) interview. Your interviewers will ask you more focused questions based on improving/optimizing your high-level designs. During these interviews, you’ll be tasked with designing objects and classes. These require a more programming-centric approach and are used to better understand your coding abilities.

How are SDIs different from other interviews?

Data consistency is important to maintain the order of messages across different nodes. Availability is crucial to provide real-time messaging capabilities to users. When tackling this problem, scalability is again a critical consideration. The system should be able to handle a high volume of ride requests and match them with available drivers in real-time. Fault tolerance is important to ensure that the service remains reliable even if there are issues with individual drivers or server failures. Data consistency is essential to maintain accurate records of rides and payments.

Common System Design Interview Questions

Designing a system involves collaborating with various stakeholders, including product managers, developers, and operations teams. Engineers must effectively communicate their ideas, explain complex concepts, and justify their design choices. It involves designing and implementing complex software systems, ensuring they are scalable, reliable, and performant. System design interviews assess a candidate's ability to solve real-world problems by designing system architectures. System design interviews have become an integral part of the hiring process in the tech industry. As companies strive to build scalable and efficient systems, they are seeking candidates who possess strong system design skills.

The Complete Toolkit for Grokking Modern System Design

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is another widely used methodology that emphasizes designing systems as a collection of loosely coupled services. Each service performs a specific function and communicates with other services through well-defined interfaces. — If you are looking to learn System Design in depth, then you can also check out this list of best System Design Courses to build your foundations and fill gaps in your understanding.

You will learn to translate these principles to practical application and compare different elements to mix and match a custom solution for any design problem. As a company grows, its needs may change, so real-world system building is often an iterative process to provide space for continual growth. For Twitter, at a high-level, we will need multiple application servers to serve all the read/write requests with load balancers in front of them for traffic distributions.

Capacity estimation calculations (sometimes called back of the envelope calculations) can be somewhat daunting given the amount of mental math they require. One of the biggest tips I have for this part of an SDI is to make it easy on yourself and purposefully use nice, round numbers. Otherwise, you’ll just waste time doing grade school math in front of your interviewer. By walking through the aspects of System Design in RESHADED, we can determine the areas where a strong-hire candidate communicated the right technical information at the right time. To read more about different engineering levels, how they approach an SDI, and developing soft skills for the SDI, please check out our new, free course, The System Design Interview Prep Handbook.

For example, someone applying to be a data engineer would be questioned more on how to build scalable pipelines. Making sure that a system can ingest and sanitize large amounts of data is key to meeting the SDI requirements. After completing a system design interview, it's essential to reflect on your performance and identify areas for improvement. This section will guide you in evaluating your performance, learning from feedback, and leveraging mistakes as learning opportunities. During the interview, actively listen to the interviewer's questions and take the time to understand their perspective.

Is grokking system design worth it?

Hope you guys now have clarity on what to do next and if you guys need this course or not. It’s one of the best resource to prepare well for System design interview and if you are serious about your tech interview, you must see it before its too late. They utilize their real-life experience in their firms as a reference to prioritize the types of questions to familiarize you with. More importantly, I was looking for guidance to approach such problems and this course provides a step-by-step approach to solve system design problems.

Who gets a system design interview?

The subscription gives you access to all the courses available on the platform, allowing you to explore various topics beyond system design. Systems design is the process of defining the architecture, modules, interfaces, and data for a system to satisfy specified requirements. Systems design could be seen as the application of systems theory to product development. It is always a good idea to estimate the scale of the system we’re going to design. This will also help later when we will be focusing on scaling, partitioning, load balancing and caching.

During a system design interview, you will be challenged to solve a real-world problem by designing a system architecture. This is an opportunity for you to showcase your ability to think critically, analyze requirements, propose a high-level design, discuss trade-offs, and dive into specific components of the system. It is important to approach this interview with a problem-solving mindset and a clear understanding of the principles of system design. Furthermore, system design is closely related to problem-solving and critical thinking skills, which are highly valued in the tech industry. When designing a system, engineers must consider various constraints and trade-offs, such as balancing performance with cost or choosing between different technologies. They need to analyze and evaluate different options, making informed decisions that align with the goals of the organization.

In summary, the system design interview is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your problem-solving skills, ability to communicate complex ideas, and your understanding of system design principles. Approach the interview with a structured mindset, consider trade-offs when making design decisions, and actively listen and communicate effectively with the interviewer. With preparation and practice, you can excel in the system design interview and showcase your expertise in designing scalable and efficient systems. Clear and concise communication is crucial during a system design interview. Practice explaining complex ideas in a simple and concise manner, highlighting the trade-offs you consider and justifying your design decisions.

Consider factors such as performance, scalability, maintainability, and cost when evaluating different design choices. Articulate your thought process and explain why you made certain design decisions. "The Distributed Systems Primer" by Martin Kleppmann is another excellent resource that delves into the fundamentals of distributed systems. This book covers topics such as replication, consistency, and distributed consensus algorithms, providing a solid foundation for designing scalable and reliable distributed systems. System architecture patterns provide reusable solutions to common design problems. By studying patterns like client-server architecture, microservices, and event-driven architecture, you can gain insights into how to structure your systems for scalability, fault tolerance, and maintainability.

Additionally, fault tolerance is crucial to ensure that the system remains operational even in the event of failures. Data consistency is another important aspect to consider, as users should see the most up-to-date posts in their feed. Availability is also a key factor, as users expect to access their feed at any time. While the exact topics covered in a system design interview may vary, there are some core areas worth reviewing.

It involves creating a blueprint for the architecture and structure of a system, considering various factors such as scalability, fault tolerance, availability, and consistency. Secondly, system design skills enable engineers to optimize performance, reduce costs, and improve overall efficiency. By carefully considering factors such as data storage, network communication, and computational resources, engineers can create systems that operate at peak performance while minimizing unnecessary expenses. This not only benefits the company's bottom line but also enhances the user experience by ensuring fast response times and seamless interactions. Firstly, a strong system design foundation allows engineers to build robust and scalable systems that can handle large user bases and high traffic.

Most of the theory of system design comes from the domain of distributed systems. Educative has an excellent course on distributed systems that we can use to refresh our knowledge of distributed systems concepts. Traditionally, mid-to-senior level candidates with more than two years of experience get at least one system design interview. For more senior applicants, two or three system design interviews are common. Just like with any other interview, we need to approach the systems design interviews strategically.

You can intentionally devote some time every Wednesday to catching up in the world of software engineering and interview prep by reading what we deliver to your email inbox. Ask your nail artist to combine the design with a pink ombrè effect for a more eye-catching manicure. With a dual-ended design, you have the option of two differently-sized dotters (3mm and 1mm) to create various Easter nail designs. For intricate nail art, like flowers and dots, use the small end.

Wake Up, Mr. Bunny!

This cheerful selection of bright pastels creates a lively Easter look. The single bunny face is a sweet focal point, adding whimsy to the vibrant colors. These nails bloom with the beauty of spring flowers, featuring delicate petals and leaves that wrap around each nail. The soft pastel background adds a touch of Easter’s gentle charm. These nails are set on a backdrop of speckled grey, where whimsical white bunnies come to life. The design gives a modern twist to the classic Easter theme.

Baby pink floral nails

The brighter colors versus muted tones makes for an especially playful result. A speckled base featuring a hatched chicken, bunny, and fluffy sheep will make everyone say "aww" whenever they catch a glimpse of your mani. Or, paint your nails a solid pastel color and use a fine-tipped brush to draw intricate glittery patterns. You could even use holographic nail polish to catch the light. You can opt for soft pastels with a sprinkle of glitter, or go bold with jewel-toned sparkles. Try creating a delicate egg design on one nail, then add a touch of sparkle to the rest.

House of Wisdom Map and Timeline

baghdad house of wisdom

In addition, a dirt track extended south past the War Eagle Mine into the Dale Mining District in the Pinto Mountains. On the west bank are a number of residential quarters, including Al-Karkh (an older quarter) and several upper middle-class districts with walled villas and green gardens. Chief among these is Al-Manṣūr, surrounding the racetrack, which provides boutiques, fast-food restaurants, and sidewalk cafés that appeal to its affluent professional residents. These areas were the most heavily developed sections of the city under the Baʿathist regime of Saddam Hussein.

History

It was bypassed by the opening of Interstate 40 to the north in 1973, and lost traveler's business and resident population. Adjacent to these commercial districts are older, middle-class residential areas, such as Al-Sulaykh to the north, Al-Wāziriyyah to the west, and Al-Karrādah to the south, now densely settled. The University of Baghdad and a fashionable residential area are located on Al-Jādriyyah, a peninsula formed by a bend in the Tigris. Baghdad is also the centre of a regional road network, connecting the city by overland routes with Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Iran, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. Within the city, a network of expressways completed in the 1980s relieves traffic congestion and links the city centre with its suburbs.

Baghdad: Libraries and House of Wisdom3 min read

It is not acceptable to speak of “Islamic Medieval Civilisation”, “Islamic Medieval Architecture”, “Islamic Medieval Science”, “Islamic Medieval Philosophy”, etc. This is because the term “Medieval” applies to European history only , for while Europe was asleep during the Dark Ages, Middle Ages, Medieval Ages, Islamic Civilisation, Culture and Heritage were in ascendancy and reached their highest achievements in various parts of the Islamic World. Abdullah Ibn al-Muqaffa ( ) was another pioneer of literary translation sponsored by the House of Wisdom. He took Greek words, such as "philosophia" that became "falsafa" in Arabic, and found translation solutions via what contemporary translators would call equivalents. Later, al-Mamun would appoint him head editor in charge of revising all translations at the House. Al-Mamun’s dedication to collecting texts and expanding the repository of classical knowledge earned him the nickname “the sage of Baghdad”.

But Rashid’s eldest son, the seventh Abbasid caliph, al-Mamun ( ), had greater ambitions for the building. Therefore, the House of Wisdom at the time of Rashid was called Bayt al-Hikmah as it was comprised of a single building. In Arabic, the term bayt (house) refers to a “covered space”, contrary to dar which refers to a complex comprising several bayt. Immediately upon taking power, he commanded his vizier Yahya al-Baramika to transfer part of the palace’s private library into a public space.

Great Muslim scholars exchanged ideas, created inventions that would radically change society

He was the first caliph who motivated Muslims to study sciences and develop them, he also advised them to translate books from Persian, Greek, and Indian languages. Among the books that al-Mansur initiated their translations were the book of Al-Sind Hind a book on mathematics and a huge collection of Aristotle, Euclid and of Claudius Ptolemy writings. The House of Wisdom (بيت الحكمة‎; Bayt al-Ḥikmah) refers either to a major Abbasid public academy and intellectual center in Baghdad or to a large private library belonging to the Abbasid Caliphs during the Islamic Golden Age.

Iraq’s Golden Age: The Rise and Fall of the House of Wisdom

The House of Wisdom flourished under al-Ma’mun’s successors al-Mu’tasim (r. 833 – 842) and his son al-Wathiq (r. 842 – 847), but considerably declined under the reign of al-Mutawakkil (r. 847–861). Although al-Ma’mun, al-Mu’tasim, and al-Wathiq followed the sect of Mu’tazili, which supported mind-broadness and scientific inquiry, al-Mutawakkil endorsed a more literal interpretation of the Qur’an and Hadith. The caliph was not interested in science and moved away from rationalism, seeing the spread of Greek philosophy as anti-Islamic. By the eighth century, with western Europe languishing in its dark ages, the Islamic empire covered an area larger in expanse than either the Roman empire at its height or all the lands conquered and ruled by Alexander the Great. So powerful and influential was this empire that, for a period stretching over 700 years, the international language of science was Arabic.

Ibn al-Haytham: The man who discovered how we see

It was designed by Caliph al-Mansur.[1] According to 11th-century scholar Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in his History of Baghdad,[2] each course of the city wall consisted of 162,000 bricks for the first third of the wall's height. The city was rebuilt and flourished under Ilkhanid rule, but never rose to its former glory. It was briefly occupied by Safavid Persia in 1508, but fell to the Ottoman Empire in 1534. With the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, Baghdad fell under the British Mandate in 1920 and became the capital of the independent Kingdom of Iraq in 1932 (converted to a Republic in 1958). Baghdad is home to diverse ethnic and religious groups with an Arab majority, as well as Kurds, Turkmens, Assyrians, Yazidis, Shabakis, Armenians and Mandaeans. The majority of the citizens are Muslims with minorities of Christians, Yezidis and Mandeans also present.

During the brief British stay at the end of the first world war, its gatehouse was used as a garrison church. Nothing of those medieval walls, or the east gate, remains today; I remember Bab al-Sharji as a sprawling, noisy and bustling square, with its food stalls and secondhand record shops scattered around the busy bus depot and taxi ranks. But its name is a reminder of the expansion and transformation of this proud city over the years since its foundation in AD762 as the new seat of power of the mighty Abbasid empire. Indeed, no other city on Earth has had to put up with the levels of death and destruction that Baghdad has endured over the centuries. And yet, as the capital of one of the world's great empires, this was the richest, proudest, most supercilious city on the planet for half a millennium. They also brought together scholars to create one of the great intellectual centres in history, called the House of Wisdom.

During the period of British control, the Mandatory administration ordered the construction of several new architectural projects around the city.[21] Iraq was given formal independence by the British in 1932, and increased autonomy in 1946. On 14 July 1958, the Iraqi king, Faisal II, was executed and the monarchy was dissolved after a revolution, forming a republic. During the 1970s, Baghdad experienced a period of prosperity and growth because of a sharp increase in the price of petroleum, Iraq's main export. New infrastructure including modern sewers, water, and highway facilities were built during this period. The basic framework of the city consists of two large semicircles about 19 km (12 mi) in diameter. The inner city connecting them was designed as a circle about 2 km (1.2 mi) in diameter, leading it to be known as the "Round City".

Arabic works and translations of important ancient Greek texts came to light, and Christian, Jewish and Muslim scholars flocked to the city to translate ancient Greek and Arabic treaties to Latin and then into European languages. Some of Baghdad’s most famous Caliphs including Al-Rashid and Al-Ma’mun had taken a personal interest in collecting global, ground-breaking scientific works. As well as collecting books from East and West, they brought together scholars from the corners of the Muslim land to create one of the greatest intellectual academies in history.

Caliph Haroon al-Rasheed is credited with expanding the glory of Baghdad to its greatest height during his reign from 786 to 809 C.E. He created an intellectual ambience by encouraging mathematicians, astronomers, scientists, and philosophers. His son, Caliph al-Mamoon went a step further by establishing the House of Wisdom in, an academic institute devoted to translations, research, and education. It quickly became one of the most famous centers of learning, attracting scholars from all over the world, from many cultures and religions. The House of Wisdom has played a distinguished role in the history of the Middle Ages for it was a bridge that transmitted the ancient civilizations including the Islamic one to the west, as it was the departure of modern sciences. Historians have a major consent that thanks to the house of wisdom and other similar schools and libraries, the continuity of human civilization was preserved after the fall of Greek and Roman civilizations.

As mentioned before, circles have a cosmic significance, and you can use this symbolism to talk about your product. A basic graphic circle can have many meanings, and it’s up to you to use it in the most significant way. A minimalist approach can go a long way if your subject is well known, and you can let the ad copy help the audience decode the meaning. This use case can give your image a sense of mystery and a compositional unity. You don’t have to use all our tips at once, choose what fits the design you’re working on and make it count. We’ve analyzed some popular posters and graphics to show you how using a simple element such as the circle can give your work meaning, and unity.

As designers, we are all very used to seeing the color wheel, one of the most recognizable circles in the design world. It works because it combines all the traits above to create an object that communicates information in a simple, powerful, harmonious way. With its circular shape and blue-white segments, the BMW logo portrays a spinning propeller against the sky, symbolizing precision engineering and innovation in the automotive industry. Now, for each of the three circles, draw an inner circle using the opening shown below. With the compass opening below, draw the three circles centered on the points of the triangle. Also, semi-circles can be used in designs to create a subtle positivity with a calming effect. The compass will be moving from point 1 to 2 to 3 then back to 1, and so on. If the sides are extended as shown here, the spiral turns clockwise (and the compass moves from point to point in a clockwise direction). Place the compass on one of the points, open it to meet the other, and draw a semicircle on the other side of the line. On a horizontal line, draw a semicircle that's as small as possible. This is the first turning of the spiral, and the two points where it cuts the line are the construction points. This spiral is defined by an equal distance between turnings, so that it has a concentric appearance.
